Fact Check: Japan's Post-War Occupation Policy Is NOT Prohibited Study Available

Is Japan's post-war occupation power referred to as the General Headquarters (GHQ) a prohibited topic of study in Japanese Universities? No, that's not true: Japanese university research papers and archives are widely available on the subject of the six-year post-war occupation policy carried out under the GHQ.

The claim appeared on TikTok video (archived here) on May 19th, 2022. The person making the claim is Sohei Kamiya, a member of the House of Councillors from Japan's right-wing Sanseito political party:

Study of GHQ's 6 years and 8 months occupation policy is prohibited in universities.

Contrary to the claim, research papers written about the subject are found on various university websites. For example: Hitotsubashi University's Thesis title: Postwar Shinko Shimbun and GHQ, Hiroshima University's GHQ's Occupation Policy Concerning the Japanese Coal Mining Industry (5), Graduate School of Economics, University of Tokyo's The Effectiveness of Economic Controls: The Early Postwar Years in Japan, Saga University's The influence of censorship and propaganda during the GHQ occupation and Ritsumeikan University's Information education activities in the private sector during the Occupation.

Moreover, GHQ historical materials are found on the Diplomatic Archives website: GHQ issued memorandums to the Japanese government from 1945 (Showa 20) to 1952 (Showa 27)

Allied occupation forces in Japan after WWII came under the command of US General Douglas MacArthur as chief executive of the Supreme Command of Allied Powers (SCAP) and his staff at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Tokyo.
